Who we are

NACEST as an institution is open to personnel of the Armed Forces as well as the civilian population

Brief History

The history of the Nigerian Army College of Environmental Science and Technology (NACEST) Makurdi dates back to 1978, when the Federal Military Government under the leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo initiated the idea of building a school of Military Engineering that would provide technical knowledge by the Nigerian Army Engineers at lower, medium and higher levels.

The construction of the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) was based on what he saw in the course of his military training in other advanced countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada. Consequently, NASME was provided with adequate structures, equipment and facilities to enable proper and conducive learning environment for the study of the course at National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels in technical fields. However, these structures were underutilized through the years until 2002 when the then Commandant NASME, Major General MC Osahor decided to explore the possibilities of establishing National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) accredited courses in NASME. His intention was to ensure optimum utilization of the facilities of the NASME as well as assist in producing skilled manpower for the Nigerian economy to enhance its growth.

In order to actualize these objectives, NBTE was invited to inspect facilities in NASME in November 2001. After a comprehensive inspection, NBTE granted provisional approval to run ND programmes in Architecture, Building Technology and Quantity Surveying. In November 2002, NAITES commenced ND programmes in these three (3) fields.

Before the visit of the NBTE in December 2004, the Institute has restricted admissions to personnel of the Nigerian Army. When full accreditation was finally granted in 2004 the management of the institute decided to open admissions to personnel of sister services of the Armed Forces as well as civilian population. The first and second set of the students trained in the institute graduated in 2004 and 2005 respectively. All admissions into NAITES were strictly based on the entry requirements as specified by NBTE.

It is pertinent to note that the facilities in NASME became overstretched due to the increase in student’s intake. Consequently, the Army Headquarters directed that NAITES be relocated to Biu to serve as it permanent site. Accordingly, the relocation was organized in phases with the School of Management Science relocating first while other schools were to follow.

NAITES was later upgraded to a university and got her approval by the Federal Executive Council and subsequently Nigerian University Commission (NUC) in the year 2018, hence the NAITES campus in Makurdi was handed over to NAEC with all its staff and facilities to be subsumed by the then NASE to run the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma (ND/HND) courses. On the 15 Aug 19 the AHQ graciously released the Establishment Order (EO) for NAISET and NACEST Makurdi as a College under NAISET.
